Empathy Over Tradition

This women’s tee confronts bullfighting as a system sustained by spectacle and tradition, yet built entirely on domination, injury, and death. Far from a demonstration of courage or skill, bullfighting is a ritualised killing designed to exhaust, wound, and ultimately destroy an animal for public applause.

The bull is not an opponent, nor a symbol to be conquered. He is a sentient being forced into an arena engineered for his depletion, stabbed repeatedly to weaken his body and provoke reactions reframed as aggression. His pain is aestheticised, his resistance misrepresented, and his death normalised as cultural heritage. This design rejects the mythology used to sanitise the practice and names the reality: deliberate cruelty protected by tradition, tourism, and profit.

The Image

The artwork captures a moment of confrontation stripped of heroism, a lone bull facing a human figure adorned in ceremonial attire within an enclosed arena built for performance rather than mercy. The composition centres imbalance: power versus vulnerability, control versus confinement.

The bull is depicted as alert and aware, not abstracted or symbolic, but present as an individual life placed in deliberate danger. The arena surrounds him as a closed system, reinforcing inevitability and human dominance. The image functions not as spectacle, but as witness, transforming the scene into a quiet indictment of what is routinely framed as entertainment.

Colour Significance

Colour is used deliberately to remove nostalgia and distance. The natural brown tones of the bull emphasise his physical presence and individuality, reinforcing that he is a living being rather than a prop within a performance. The muted gold and ochre tones of the arena evoke age, permanence, and institutional acceptance, a visual reminder of how long this violence has been culturally protected.

In contrast, the matador’s red sheet draws immediate focus. Traditionally used to provoke, distract, and dominate, it symbolises manufactured conflict, a tool designed to manipulate perception while concealing the exhaustion and injury already inflicted upon the animal. Together, these colours expose the mechanics of the spectacle and refuse romanticisation.
