This piece accompanies a written testimony.
This work exists For The Animals, not as symbol, not as metaphor, and not as an expression of personal gain.
The wider record is preserved as each letter is released, with access shared through Letters of Witness.
Each testimony image is intentionally framed with a clean, light border as part of the record, and the embroidered emblem is individually executed on every made-to-order garment, with natural variation in thread colour and finish.
Mock-up imagery is illustrative. Slight variations may occur in the final garment, reflecting its individual production.
A Statement Against Manufactured Suffering
This women’s tee confronts the hidden violence of sheep farming through a realistic, contemporary portrayal that rejects the pastoral myths often used to shield the industry from scrutiny. Sheep farming is routinely framed as gentle and traditional, yet it is built upon forced reproduction, bodily control, and premature death, a system designed to extract maximum yield from living beings while denying their individuality, autonomy, and emotional lives.
Sheep are intelligent, socially bonded animals capable of recognition, fear, distress, and attachment. Ewes form strong maternal bonds with their lambs, respond to vocalisations, and experience stress when separated. Industrial sheep farming depends on suppressing these realities, treating sentient animals as interchangeable units rather than individuals capable of suffering.
From birth, lambs are absorbed into a system that assigns value through productivity alone. Many are slaughtered while still young; others are retained only long enough to replace those already lost. Maternal separation is routine, not incidental, a calculated disruption imposed to serve production efficiency rather than welfare.
Procedures such as tail docking, castration, invasive shearing, long-distance transport, and early slaughter are standard practice, frequently performed without sufficient pain relief. Injury, exposure, and high mortality rates are not anomalies but expected outcomes, absorbed into industry margins as acceptable losses.
The Image
The illustration presents lambs confined within a dim, enclosed space, marked with identification numbers that strip them of individuality and reduce them to inventory. Their stillness and proximity evoke confinement rather than safety, while the absence of open pasture challenges the comforting imagery often associated with sheep farming. The scene reflects a controlled environment where life is catalogued, managed, and ultimately expendable, exposing the disconnect between how sheep are marketed to the public and how they are treated within industrial systems.
The Words Beneath the Surface
“A system that forces innocence into the world only to exploit and consume it has butchered every last trace of compassion.”
This statement speaks to the deliberate creation of life for the sole purpose of extraction. Lambs enter the world innocent, vulnerable, and dependent, yet are immediately folded into a structure that views their bodies as resources rather than lives. Repeated impregnation, severed maternal bonds, physical mutilation, and early death are not unintended consequences, they are built into the design of the system itself. Compassion is not absent by accident; it is actively removed to allow exploitation to function without interruption.
Each piece stands as A Declaration of Freedom for All Beings, rejecting systems that manufacture life for use and affirming that tradition, familiarity, and profit can never justify exploitation.
Colour Significance
Warm ochre and muted gold tones dominate the composition, evoking the comforting hues often used to romanticise rural life. These colours mirror the visual language of tradition and nostalgia, deliberately drawing the viewer in before revealing the harsher reality beneath. Soft cream and off-white shades reflect the innocence of the lambs themselves, while shadowed backgrounds introduce a sense of enclosure and unease, symbolising the concealed suffering that exists behind familiar pastoral imagery. Together, these colours expose how gentleness is used as camouflage for systemic harm.
Wear Your Values
This tee is a refusal to accept exploitation disguised as care. It is a stand against industries that normalise suffering through familiarity and tradition, and a call to recognise sheep not as commodities, but as sentient beings deserving of dignity, safety, and freedom. Wear your values in solidarity with those whose voices are systematically silenced.
