This women’s tee confronts the realities of modern pig farming through a deliberately grounded and unembellished visual language. Free from romanticisation or pastoral myth, the design places pig exploitation firmly in the present, exposing an industry structured around efficiency, confinement, and emotional erasure rather than care or respect for life.

Pigs are among the most intelligent and emotionally complex animals exploited for food. They form deep social bonds, recognise individuals, and experience fear, curiosity, distress, and comfort. This awareness is not absent within industrial systems, it is deliberately disregarded. What should compel protection is instead treated as an obstacle to productivity.

Across the industry, mother pigs are routinely confined in metal crates so restrictive they cannot turn, nest, or respond naturally to their piglets. Piglets endure procedures such as tail docking and teeth clipping, often without pain relief, before being raised in overcrowded, barren environments dominated by waste, noise, and stress. Many are ultimately killed in carbon dioxide gas chambers, a method documented to cause panic, breathlessness, and severe distress prior to loss of consciousness.

This piece exists to expose what has been normalised and to challenge the moral distance that allows such treatment to continue unseen.

The Image: Witness Within Confinement

The illustration places the viewer face-to-face with pigs confined within a space designed to restrict movement, choice, and autonomy. Their bodies are crowded together, yet their expressions remain individual, alert, sentient, and unmistakably aware. The composition intentionally centres their eyes, which remain expressive despite surroundings engineered to suppress identity and agency.

The scene is not staged for comfort, it is built to feel close, enclosed, and inescapable, mirroring the physical and psychological pressure imposed by intensive farming systems.

The words confront the viewer with an uncomfortable truth: that cruelty persists not because it is unseen, but because it is repeatedly dismissed. The darkness referenced is not abstract, it is the collective willingness to normalise confinement, mutilation, and mechanised death while denying the significance of sentient life.

This slogan forms the ethical core of the campaign, calling for reflection not only on what is done to pigs, but on what is revealed about us when we allow it to continue.

Colour Significance

The colour palette is intentionally restrained, using symbolism to anchor the illustration in the lived reality of industrial pig farming.

Cool blues and cold greys dominate the environment, echoing the metal bars, concrete flooring, artificial lighting, and sterile infrastructure that define intensive units. These tones communicate emotional isolation and institutional control, a setting stripped of warmth, earth, or softness.

In contrast, the pigs are rendered in natural earthy browns and soft flesh tones, reinforcing their organic vulnerability and individuality within a system designed to treat them as output rather than beings. The warm ochre border functions as a visual warning, signalling exposure, caution, and moral unease, as though the viewer is being asked to step across a threshold and recognise what is usually kept hidden.
