This piece accompanies a written testimony.
This work exists For The Animals, not as symbol, not as metaphor, and not as an expression of personal gain.
The wider record is preserved as each letter is released, with access shared through Letters of Witness.
Each testimony image is intentionally framed with a clean, light border as part of the record, and the embroidered emblem is individually executed on every made-to-order garment, with natural variation in thread colour and finish.
Mock-up imagery is illustrative. Slight variations may occur in the final garment, reflecting its individual production.
Against Lives Lived in Confinement
This women’s tee exposes a system where life is engineered within walls built for efficiency rather than care, an industry that reduces sentient beings to production units from the moment they hatch.
Chickens and other birds are selectively bred for unnaturally accelerated growth or relentless egg output, forcing their bodies beyond biological limits. Confined by the thousands inside vast industrial sheds, they are denied space, rest, and the ability to express even the most basic natural behaviours. Many will never feel sunlight, breathe fresh air, touch soil, or experience meaningful movement, their entire existence restricted to controlled interiors designed to maximise output in the shortest possible time.
Suffering is woven into every stage of this system. Genetic manipulation, overcrowding, injury, disease, and chronic stress are routine rather than exceptional. Weak or unwanted chicks are discarded at birth, while those who survive endure lives dictated by artificial lighting cycles, constant noise, ammonia-filled air, and physical exhaustion, before being killed long before reaching natural maturity.
The Image as Witness
The illustration presents an endless interior of stacked enclosures, filled with birds pressed tightly together, stretching into darkness beyond sight. Their repetition reflects the scale of confinement, not as an isolated cruelty, but as a structure built on volume and replacement. Individual identity dissolves into uniformity, mirroring how industrial poultry farming treats living beings as interchangeable bodies rather than conscious lives.
The perspective draws you into the corridor itself, placing the viewer inside the system instead of observing it from a safe distance. The birds’ faces remain visible at every level, making it impossible to look away from who is contained within these engineered spaces.
A Statement of Reckoning
“No living being should breathe their first breath in a place designed for their last.”
This statement confronts the logic at the core of industrial poultry farming, a system where birth and death are engineered to occur within the same enclosed space. It challenges the normalisation of environments created not for life to unfold, but for bodies to be depleted and replaced.
The message rejects the idea that efficiency can justify confinement, or that necessity can excuse a structure where existence itself is treated as disposable. It names the violence of designing spaces where survival is measured only in output, and where life begins already marked for termination.
Each piece stands as A Declaration of Freedom for All Beings, rejecting the reduction of sentient lives to yield, confinement, and systematic erasure disguised as food production.
Colour in the Service of Truth
This design is rendered in restrained, natural colour to remove nostalgia and expose the scene as present-day reality. Warm ochre, muted gold, and soft cream tones echo the birds’ natural feathers, a reminder that these are living beings, not products. The vivid reds of combs and wattles punctuate the image like warning marks, signalling stress, vulnerability, and life held under constant strain.
In contrast, the cool blue-green structure and the harsh, pale industrial lighting emphasise the unnatural environment imposed on them: sterile, controlled, and designed for containment. The palette is intentional, it keeps the birds recognisably alive and individual, while making the shed feel endless, clinical, and inescapable.
Wear Your Values
This is a refusal to accept lives designed for depletion.
A stand against confinement normalised as food production.
A declaration that sentient beings are not units of yield.
Wear your values in defence of space, dignity, and the right of all beings to live beyond cages.
